　　慈禧垂帘听政以后，在宫内作威作福，享受人间荣华富贵。单饮食就与众不同。慈禧在饮食方面有三大爱好。

　　一是爱饮花茶。慈禧饮茶成癖，而且特别讲究。她饮的茶不是经过火焙的茉莉或玫瑰，而是刚采摘的鲜花，搀入干茶里再泡入茶盅，所以饮起来既有茶香又有花香。泡茶用的水是当天从玉泉山运来的泉水。

慈禧饮茶用的杯子是用白玉制成的，茶托是金的茶托上要放三个杯子，中间是茶，两边是花。当慈禧饮茶时两位太监双手共捧茶托跑在慈禧面前，口呼：“老佛爷品茗了！”慈禧这才饮用。

　　二是爱吃金色鲤鱼。吃时必须有两名宫好三次净手后将鱼肉一块一块摘净刺儿，送入她的口中。有一回一名宫女由于疏忽，鱼肉中有个小刺儿没剔净便送入她口中。她顿时一紧张，急忙往外卡，终于将鱼刺吐出来。此时惊动了李莲英，他大骂宫女对老佛爷不忠，有意陷害。在慈禧的旨意下，立即赐这名宫女自缢而死。

　　三是爱吃臭豆腐。安徽举子王致和官运不通，屡试不中。后来就做臭豆腐买卖。有一次慈禧吃王致和的臭豆腐，觉得非常可口，于是天天要吃。到了清末，王致和的臭豆腐竟成了慈禧的御膳珍品。每顿饭都离不了。而且必须是当天从“王致和南酱园”买来的。但有时去晚了买不到新的，太监们就只好用剩下的。为人狡诈的慈禧为了考验侍候她的人，有一次在进膳时，把一粒花椒暗藏在臭豆腐中。到第二天进膳时，她发现那粒花椒还在，于是就严厉处罚了主管太监。从此太监们只好到“王致和南酱园”求方便，以保证不误“上用”。
